The Outsiders musical is a stage adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s classic novel, which is a seminal work in young adult fiction.

The show will open in New York at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on 11 April 2024 with previews from 16 March.

Set in the 1960s in Oklahoma, USA, it explores the socio-economic divide and the resulting tensions between two teen groups: the Greasers and the Socs (short for Socials).

The story is centred around Ponyboy Curtis, a young and thoughtful Greaser who lives with his two older brothers, Sodapop and Darry, following the death of their parents. The Greasers are from the poorer side of town, characterised by their long hair and leather jackets, while the Socs are from the wealthier side, driving fancy cars and sporting preppy attire.

The narrative unfolds as Ponyboy and his best friend Johnny Cade, also a Greaser, find themselves in a tragic altercation with a group of Socs, leading to the accidental death of a Soc. This incident escalates the long-standing feud between the two groups, culminating in a rumble.

Ponyboy and Johnny, along with their friend Dallas Winston, are forced to navigate the consequences of their actions and the harsh realities of their social environment. As the story progresses, Ponyboy’s perspective on life and his understanding of the world around him evolve.

He realises that, despite their social differences, the Greasers and Socs share common ground in their experiences of pain and joy.
